As we mark Pride Month 2025, the global LGBTQ+ community finds itself at a crossroads. In the face of significant political and legal challenges, the spirit of Pride (rooted in resistance, resilience, and community solidarity) remains as vital as ever.
This year, we not only celebrate our identities and achievements but also confront the setbacks that threaten the progress we've made.
Challenges: A Backdrop of Regression across the Globe
United States: Rollbacks Under the Trump Administration
Across the Atlantic, in the United States, the second term of President Donald Trump has ushered in a series of policies that have alarmed LGBTQ+ community and its allies.
Notably, the U.S. Supreme Court recently allowed the Trump administration to enforce a ban on transgender individuals serving in the military, reversing previous inclusive policies and affecting thousands of service members.
Additionally, the US Department of Defense, has initiated the renaming of naval ships previously honoring civil rights figures. This includes the controversial decision to remove the name of Harvey Milk, a pioneering gay rights activist from a naval vessel. Critics argue that these actions represent a broader attempt to erase LGBTQ+ contributions from national history.
United Kingdom: Legal Definitions and Declining Rankings
Here in the United Kingdom our community is facing its own challenges. In April, the UK Supreme Court ruled that the term "sex" in the Equality Act 2010 refers to biological sex, a decision that has significant implications for transgender individuals seeking legal recognition and protection.
This ruling coincides with the UK's decline in ILGA-Europe's Rainbow Map, which assesses the legal and policy landscape for LGBTQ+ people across Europe. The UK has dropped to 22nd place out of 49 countries, its lowest position ever, reflecting concerns over the erosion of LGBTQ+ rights and protections.
Countries with similar rankings to the UK include:
Croatia
Slovenia
Switzerland
Bosnia and Herzegovina
Serbia
Estonia
Kosovo
Slovakia
It's important to note that while these countries are in proximity to the UK's ranking, each has its unique context and challenges regarding LGBTQ+ equality and protections.
