Today marks the start of a very special and important exhibition at Wakefield Kirkgate

Railway Station.

From today, Tuesday 2nd June until Sunday 7th June 2026, visitors to our Community Gallery can view a section of the UK AIDS Memorial Quilt, one of the most powerful memorials ever created in response to the HIV and AIDS epidemic.

We are incredibly proud to be hosting part of this historic display as part of a wider programme of events taking place across Wakefield this week.

For many within the LGBT+ community, the history of HIV and AIDS is deeply personal. The AIDS Memorial Quilt tells the stories of people who were lost during the epidemic, ensuring their lives, contributions and memories are never forgotten.

Each panel represents a person who was loved by their family, friends and community. Together, they form a powerful act of remembrance and a lasting symbol of compassion, resilience and activism.

Why We Are Displaying the Quilt

Our Community Gallery at Wakefield Kirkgate has always been about more than displaying artwork. It exists to tell stories, celebrate communities and create opportunities for learning and conversation.

By bringing part of the AIDS Memorial Quilt into a public railway station, we hope to make these important stories accessible to people who may not otherwise visit a museum or exhibition space. Every day, thousands of people pass through Kirkgate Station. This week, they will have the opportunity to stop, reflect and learn about a significant chapter of LGBT+ history.

The HIV and AIDS epidemic shaped generations of LGBT+ people and communities. The Quilt reminds us not only of loss, but also of the strength, care and solidarity that emerged in response.

David, Chair of LonGBoaT Wakefield, said:

"Our Community Gallery was created to tell stories, celebrate communities and create opportunities for learning and conversation. We are honoured to be able to host part of the AIDS Memorial Quilt and help ensure these stories remain visible and accessible to the public
The history of HIV and AIDS is an important part of LGBT+ history, but it is also a story about community, compassion and the power of people coming together to support one another. We hope visitors take a moment to reflect on the lives represented within the Quilt and the lessons that remain relevant today."

Why This Matters Today

Whilst HIV treatment and understanding have improved dramatically over the past four decades, education and awareness remain as important as ever. The AIDS Memorial Quilt reminds us of the importance of compassion over stigma, understanding over fear, and community over isolation.

It also reminds us why LGBT+ stories deserve to be told, preserved and shared.

By displaying part of the Quilt at Wakefield Kirkgate, we hope to honour those who came before us whilst helping new generations understand the history that helped shape the community we know today.
