Our volunteers support the Wakefield Kirkgate Station Adoption project throughout the year, and there are plenty of ways to get involved, whether you can give a little time now and then, or want to be part of something ongoing.

We host a Wakefield Kirkgate Volunteering Day on the first Saturday of every month from 11am, which is a great opportunity to meet the team, see what we’re working on, and get hands-on at the station. That said, volunteering doesn’t stop there. Opportunities are available throughout the week, and we’re always happy to work around people’s availability.

Since adopting Wakefield Kirkgate Railway Station in June 2024, LonGBoaT Wakefield has been working alongside Northern, Grand Central, Network Rail, Groundwork Yorkshire, Wakefield Council and other partners to help make the station a welcoming, vibrant space at the heart of the city. Our aim is to ensure the station reflects Wakefield’s heritage, creativity and sense of community, and that includes making it an inclusive place where LGBT+ people feel visible, valued and safe.

Volunteering with us can be as hands-on or as behind-the-scenes as you like. Roles include planting and gardening, general maintenance, creative projects, and practical improvements around the station. No experience is needed; we provide a full safety induction and all necessary equipment, so you’ll be supported from day one.

We also offer wider opportunities to get involved beyond the station itself. This includes training sessions such as Samaritans-led courses, as well as roles in web design, blog writing, communications and social media. These roles are vital in helping us tell our story, share positive LGBT+ visibility, and keep our community connected.

If you’re interested in volunteering in a way that suits your skills, interests and availability, we’d love to hear from you.
