LonGBoaT Wakefield and BHA Wakefield are proud to invite you to a series of fundraising events to mark World AIDS Day 2024. These events, held at The New Union, Wakefield (WF1 1UZ), aim to bring the community together to raise awareness, celebrate progress, and honour those affected by HIV and AIDS. With something for everyone, this programme combines fun, reflection, and education to support an important cause.

The Events

Trivia Quiz – Thursday, 28th November 2024 at 8 PM Kick off the weekend with a fun and engaging trivia quiz featuring tailored questions and exciting prizes. Gather your friends and test your knowledge while supporting a great cause.

Wear It Red Event – Saturday, 30th November 2024 at 8 PM Dress in your boldest red and enjoy a night of fantastic entertainment. The evening will feature live performances by Trix, a rock and pop singer, as well as show-stopping drag acts from Ariel 51 and Poptart. Let’s paint the night red and raise awareness in style!

World AIDS Day Vigil – Sunday, 1st December 2024 at 5 PM Conclude the weekend with a quiet and meaningful vigil led by a non-denominational celebrant. This event offers a moment of reflection to honor those we’ve lost and reaffirm our commitment to fighting stigma and supporting those living with HIV.

Why We Still Need World AIDS Day in 2024

World AIDS Day remains vital. Despite medical advances, such as the understanding that U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable) - meaning people living with HIV who are on effective treatment cannot pass the virus to others. Stigma and misinformation persist.

Globally, HIV disproportionately affects marginalised communities, and access to treatment and education is uneven. By coming together, we can challenge stereotypes, promote awareness, and support life-saving services.

Key Facts About HIV:

  • HIV cannot be transmitted through casual contact, kissing, or sharing food.

  • Modern treatments allow people living with HIV to lead long, healthy lives.

  • Education, testing, and treatment are crucial in reducing new transmissions.
