This week, LonGBoaT Wakefield had the pleasure of facilitating an exciting meeting with Kevin from the Wakefield Civic Society and Dave and Christine from Groundworks Yorkshire. The purpose? To discuss the restoration and reinstallation of two missing blue plaques at Wakefield Kirkgate Station and to uncover the whereabouts of a third plaque and a prestigious design award.
The meeting took place at the station, and right from the start, progress was made! Kevin quickly identified that the plaque we had on-site was, in fact, one of the plaques previously thought to be missing. Meanwhile, after a brief discussion, Dave and Christine suggested that the missing brass plaque might currently reside at the Groundworks Yorkshire office. This discovery marked an encouraging step forward in our mission to celebrate the station’s historical and architectural heritage.
This meeting is a shining example of the power of collaboration. LonGBoaT Wakefield is delighted to bring together these fantastic organisations to work towards a shared goal: ensuring Wakefield Kirkgate Station is adorned with the awards and plaques it deserves.
Additionally, the meeting was a success in another key area: LonGBoaT gained valuable insights into a piece of public art located on the station approach that it hopes to see restored to its former glory. This restoration would further enhance the station’s appeal and significance as a cultural and historical site.
The blue plaques and the design award symbolise the station’s rich history and the effort that went into its restoration and revitalisation. By reinstating them, we can continue to honour the past while showcasing the station as a source of pride for Wakefield.
More updates will follow as we continue to piece together the station’s heritage. With the combined efforts of the Wakefield Historical Society, Groundworks Yorkshire, and LonGBoaT Wakefield, we are confident that the missing pieces of the station’s story will soon find their rightful place.
Together, we’re making history: one plaque at a time!
Updated: A previous version of this post incorrectly cited the meeting was with the Wakefield Historical Society, instead of the Wakefield Civic Society. Please accept our apologies in making this error. LonGBoaT Wakefield.
