New Community Gallery Exhibition Celebrates Creativity at Wakefield Kirkgate

Visitors travelling through Wakefield Kirkgate Railway Station can now enjoy a brand-new exhibition in our Community Gallery, showcasing artwork created by participants of the Wakefield Kirkgate Station Project.

The exhibition builds on the success of our striking LGBT+ community mural, "We Look With the Eyes of Others – Blinkered Sheep", created by local artist Marie. Since its installation, the mural has become a talking point for passengers and visitors alike, celebrating diversity, encouraging conversation and reinforcing Wakefield Kirkgate's role as a welcoming community space.

Our latest exhibition continues our story of community and connection at Wakefield Kirkgate.

Created in partnership with Groundwork Yorkshire, the exhibition features original artwork produced by participants attending the 2026 art and horticulture workshops delivered at Wakefield Kirkgate. The sessions were funded by the UK Government SPF fund and supported by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority. Bringing people together to learn new skills, build confidence and explore their creativity.

Over several months, participants explored a range of themes inspired by both art and horticulture. The group experimented with different artistic techniques, producing a collection of colourful and thoughtful pieces that reflect their experiences throughout the project.

The exhibition demonstrates how art and nature can work hand in hand to improve wellbeing, make new friendships and strengthen connections in the community. For many participants, the workshops provided an opportunity to gain confidence and contribute to a project that will now be seen by thousands of passengers travelling through Wakefield Kirkgate each week. After their current exhibition in the Community Gallery the artworks will be going on permanent display elsewhere at Wakefield Kirkgate.

At LonGBoaT Wakefield, we're proud that our Community Gallery continues to provide a platform for local artists, community groups and creative projects. Every exhibition tells a different story and helps transform the station into more than just somewhere to catch a train. It has become a space where culture, heritage and community come together.
