Volunteers Make a Real Difference at Wakefield Kirkgate

Last month, we were delighted to welcome colleagues from Northern to Wakefield Kirkgate Railway Station for a day of volunteering alongside our own Friends of Wakefield Kirkgate volunteers.

The day demonstrated just how much can be achieved when organisations and volunteers come together with a shared goal of making our station a more welcoming place for everyone.

Throughout the day, volunteers rolled up their sleeves and tackled a wide range of improvement projects across the station.

Wooden fencing and several of our well-loved planters were given a fresh coat of paint, helping to brighten the station and breathe new life into areas that had begun to show signs of wear.

The station entrance also received a thorough deep clean and a fresh lick of paint, creating a cleaner and more inviting welcome for passengers arriving at Wakefield Kirkgate.

The team also carried out an extensive litter pick across the station and surrounding areas, helping to keep the environment looking its best, while new signage was installed to improve the experience for visitors using the station.

These improvements build on the ongoing work of the Friends of Wakefield Kirkgate, led by LonGBoaT Wakefield through our Station Adoption Project. Working alongside partners including Northern, Grand Central, Network Rail, Groundwork Yorkshire and many others, we're continuing to transform Wakefield Kirkgate into a station that the whole community can be proud of.

None of this would be possible without our fantastic volunteers. Every hour donated helps improve the station, create a greener environment, preserve community spaces and make Wakefield Kirkgate a more welcoming gateway to our city.
