Here’s your informal monthly roundup from LonGBoaT Wakefield — what we’ve been up to, and what’s coming.

We have announced that we will be taking part in the Reclaim the Night Wakefield march on 27 November, from banner-making at 15:00 to the actual march at 18:00. It matters because safer streets are for everyone; women, trans and non-binary folks, the LGBT+ community. If you want to join us or help at our stall from 17:00, we’d love to see you there.

Over at Platform 2 & 3 on Kirkgate Station, the Pontefract Art Club has displayed a number of beautiful paintings in the Community Gallery. It’s free to visit, perfect for a train-wait or stroll through the station.

Our Safe Space Scheme has grown, five local businesses have signed up to signal they’re inclusive and welcoming. The scheme gives window stickers, digital badges and a listing in our directory: all free. Joining means more than signage: it means inclusive dress codes, zero tolerance for discrimination, respect for pronouns, and policies that support diversity.

We’re partnering with Oliver Thompson (a queer trans counsellor) who will host sessions at our Hub in Kirkgate Station. He uses a person-centred approach and has lived experience with the LGBT+ community. These sessions add an important support layer for members of our community who may be seeking guidance, reflection or simply a safe space to talk.

Our team was at the unveiling of a blue plaque honouring Thomas Peckett (1834-1891), locomotive builder, at WX Wakefield Exchange. We also set up an info stall and presented to the audience about our Station Adoption Project at Kirkgate. We welcomed visitors, and it was a chance to highlight heritage, community and the importance of local involvement.
