Since the launch of LonGBoaT Wakefield's LGBT+ Safe Space Scheme, we have had five local businesses register:

We are still reaching out to local businesses and services to get involved. Whether you’re a cosy café, a local community group, or a big employer, you can sign up and signal to everyone that your space is inclusive and welcoming to LGBT+ folks. Here’s what’s in it for you:

  • A snazzy window sticker to show off in your premises

  • A digital badge to display online—on your website, socials, email… you name it

  • A listing on our growing directory, helping people find your inclusive spot in a flash

What Does Signing Up Mean?

Joining the scheme is all about real, everyday inclusion. The values were crafted by our LGBT+ service users themselves, and they’re practical, welcoming, and scalable; whether you’re a sole trader or a public service.

By joining, you're committing to:

  • Inclusive dress codes – let your team dress in a way that reflects who they are

  • Zero tolerance for discrimination – call it out and nurture respect

  • Respect for names & pronouns – use and update them with care

  • Visible support – donate, take part in Pride, host an event, whatever works for you

  • Inclusive language – think “Partner” or “everyone” rather than defaulting to “sir/madam”

  • Welcoming feedback – and don’t be afraid to ask LGBT+ groups for help if you need it

  • Supportive policies – anti-discrimination, inclusive hiring, parental leave, gender-neutral facilities… the lot

  • Training opportunities – we’ll connect you with inclusive practice training, whether it’s through us or other organisations

The Practical Bits

It’s completely free to join, and we’ll hook you up with all the materials you need. If you're able to, a voluntary donation will help us keep the scheme growing far and wide across Wakefield. Plus, printed materials are available at a low cost if you’d like extras.

Why Now?

Because in 2025, being inclusive is both the right thing to do and a smart move. This scheme enables you to:

  • Walk the talk – not just Pride-themed gestures, but a year-round commitment

  • Win trust and loyalty – LGBT+ people still face exclusion; showing you care makes a real difference

  • Scale up easily – it works for everyone, big or small

  • Tap into a supportive network – join other Wakefield spaces standing with the community

  • Lean on us when in doubt – we’ve got your back with guidance, training, and resources
