We’re excited to announce that LonGBoaT Wakefield will be participating in the Reclaim the Night event in Wakefield and we want you there with us. Safe streets matter for everyone.
What’s going on
Date & time: Thursday 27 November 2025, from 14:30 until around 22:00.
Location: Union Street, Wakefield WF1 3AD
Programme highlights:
Banner-making drop-in from 15:00 at Wakefield One Library.
Meet local providers & join LonGBoaT’s stall at 17:00 at WX Wakefield Exchange.
The march kicks off at 18:00.
Why LonGBoaT being there matters
We know violence, harassment and fear in public spaces affect many of us, especially women, trans people and those in the LGBT+ community. LonGBoaT being visible at this event sends a strong message: we belong in these spaces and our safety matters.
The event is rooted in protecting women and girls when the nights draw in. The local council states that this is “about building stronger, safer communities” and that “tackling violence against women and girls is everyone’s responsibility”.
But “women and girls” doesn’t stop at cis-women. Trans women, non-binary people, gender-diverse folks and LGBT+ people also face threats in public spaces, whether due to gender, visibility, or sexual orientation.
Representation counts. When an LGBT+ organisation like LonGBoaT takes a stall, it means: we are seen, we engage, and we change culture from within. It means providing a welcoming presence, offering information and support, and showing allies and community members that safety isn’t optional.
Trans people face disproportionate risks of harassment and violence in public. When trans voices are part of a march “for safer spaces”, it strengthens the message that safety must include everyone, and that gender-based violence intersects with transphobia.
LonGBoaT’s participation underlines that violence against women isn’t separate from LGBT+ issues. Many women identify as LGBT+, and many trans people are women. Our struggles are intertwined. Marching for safer communities means recognising and acting on that intersection.

What to expect at LonGBoaT’s stall
We’ll have information about our services, community support and safe-space initiatives in Wakefield.
Volunteers will be on hand to talk with you, listen to your concerns and signpost help.
Drop in any time from 17:00 onward. Come early if you’d like to help set up or get a banner made.
Bring friends, bring your voice, bring your banner. The more we show up together, the stronger our statement.
Why you should join
Because safer streets matter for all of us.
Because when LGBT+ people are visible in these campaigns, we make it harder for harassment and exclusion to hide.
Because intersectional safety means women’s safety and trans safety and queer safety.
Because community power builds change — not just policy or lights on the street, but voices in the march, banners in hand.
Bring this with you
Comfortable shoes (we’ll be marching).
A banner or placard if you like (we’ll have drop-in banner-making).
A friend. Solidarity makes it easier and stronger.
Willingness to engage: talk, listen, support.
Let’s make it count
This isn’t just a march for women. It’s a call for all of us to walk through Wakefield with purpose, to reclaim public space and say: we will be safe. we will be heard. we will be here. LonGBoaT Wakefield believes that. We’re showing up. Will you?
Let us know you’re coming. Spread the word. See you at the stall on 27 November.
