This summer, Wakefield will host something truly powerful and deeply important to the LGBT+ community: the UK AIDS Memorial Quilt.

LonGBoaT Wakefield is proud to be getting involved in this significant event, supporting awareness, remembrance, and community reflection as the Quilt comes to the district.

A Historic Moment for Wakefield

From 4th to 7th June 2026, the UK AIDS Memorial Quilt will be on display at Wakefield Exchange: marking the first time the full Quilt has been shown outside of London.

This is a major cultural and community moment, not just for Wakefield, but for the whole of the North of England. The exhibition is free to attend and a screening of the documentary There Is A Light That Never Goes Out, exploring the Quilt’s history and its powerful legacy.

What is the AIDS Memorial Quilt?

The UK AIDS Memorial Quilt is part of the world’s largest community art project, first created in 1985 by activist Cleve Jones in response to the AIDS crisis. Made up of 42 quilts and 23 individual panels, it commemorates over 384 people affected by HIV and AIDS.

Each panel has been lovingly created by friends, partners, and families. Telling individual stories of love, loss, and remembrance.

At a time when stigma and misinformation were widespread, the Quilt became both a memorial and a form of protest, raised awareness and demands visibility for those whose lives were too often ignored.

Why This Still Matters Today

For the LGBT+ community, the history of HIV and AIDS is not distant, it is lived history. The fight for equality that continues today.

Projects like the AIDS Memorial Quilt ensure that:

  • People are remembered as individuals, not statistics

  • Stories are preserved and shared across generations

  • The ongoing impact of HIV is not forgotten

Even today, HIV continues to affect communities, and stigma still exists. Events like this are an opportunity to educate, reflect, and stand together in solidarity.

LonGBoaT Wakefield’s Involvement

As an LGBT+ charity rooted in Wakefield, it’s vital that we support opportunities like this for our community. Ensuring we are visible, represented, and connected to its history.

We’ll be encouraging all from our community; volunteers, and partners to attend, learn, and take part in what promises to be a powerful and emotional experience.
