Following the announcement that Wakefield will host the powerful UK AIDS Memorial Quilt this June, we’re proud to share that LonGBoaT Wakefield will also be bringing a section of the Quilt to Wakefield Kirkgate Railway Station!
From Tuesday 2nd June to Sunday 7th June 2026 (inclusive), a selected panel of the Quilt will be displayed in our Community Gallery at Wakefield Kirkgate Station; creating an additional space for reflection, remembrance, and learning right at the heart of our community.
Our Community Gallery has always been about more than just art, it’s about telling stories, amplifying voices, and creating space for conversations that matter.
By hosting part of the AIDS Memorial Quilt at Wakefield Kirkgate, we are helping to ensure that these stories are visible and accessible to people as they move through the station; whether they’re commuting, visiting, or simply passing through.
For many in the LGBT+ community, the history of HIV and AIDS is deeply personal. The Quilt stands as both a tribute and a reminder of the strength, resilience, and activism that emerged during one of the most challenging periods in our shared history.
The Main Exhibition in Wakefield
Alongside our Community Gallery display, the full UK AIDS Memorial Quilt will be exhibited at Wakefield Exchange:

This is a chance to experience the Quilt alongside members of our community, with space to reflect, share thoughts, and better understand the stories behind the panels.
Whether you’re attending on your own or with others, you’ll be warmly welcomed to join.
Why This Matters
Bringing the Quilt into both a gallery setting and a public transport space helps to:
Ensure LGBT+ histories are visible in everyday environments
Reach people who may not otherwise attend exhibitions
Encourage reflection, education, and conversation
Challenge ongoing stigma around HIV
Even today, HIV awareness and education remain vital. By sharing these stories openly, we continue the work of those who fought for visibility, dignity, and care.
Standing Together as a Community
At LonGBoaT Wakefield, we believe it is vital that LGBT+ stories are told, remembered, and shared. The AIDS Memorial Quilt is not just history - it is a living reminder of why community, compassion, and visibility still matter today. By bringing a section of the Quilt to Wakefield Kirkgate, we hope to create an accessible, everyday space where those stories can continue to be seen, honoured, and remembered.
