Why We’re Mothballing Our Twitter/X Account

In recent years, social media platforms have become essential tools for organisations like ours to connect with our communities, share updates, and amplify underrepresented voices.

For a long time, Twitter/X account served as a valuable space for dialogue, activism, and support. However, recent developments have prompted us to rethink the role of this platform in our communications strategy. Today, we’re announcing our decision to mothball our Twitter/X account.

Why Now?

1. The Platform’s Shifting Landscape

When Elon Musk purchased Twitter in late 2022, many anticipated changes; some welcome, others concerning. Over time, these concerns have materialised in ways that directly affect the platform’s culture and functionality. Policies around content moderation have been relaxed, and hateful speech, including anti-LGBT+ rhetoric, has surged. While Twitter/X continues to be a tool for many, the environment has grown increasingly hostile to the very communities we strive to serve.

2. Rising Hate Speech and Misinformation

Studies have documented a dramatic rise in hate speech targeting marginalised groups on Twitter/X since Musk’s takeover. This includes a sharp increase in anti-LGBT+ content. As an organisation dedicated to supporting and uplifting our community, we cannot justify maintaining an active presence on a platform that fails to enforce adequate safeguards against harassment and abuse.

3. Prioritising Well-being

Social media should be a place for connection and inspiration, not a source of stress and harm. Unfortunately, the toxicity on Twitter/X has made it harder to justify its use as a safe and productive space. By mothballing our account, we aim to focus our energy on platforms and initiatives that align better with our mission and values.

.

What Does This Mean?

  • Alternative Platforms: Our focus will shift to platforms where we see a more supportive and constructive environment for dialogue. You can continue to connect with us on our other social media accounts, where we’ll remain active and engaged.

  • Direct Communication: For those who rely on Twitter/X to reach us, we encourage you to use our email or website contact forms. We’re committed to maintaining open lines of communication outside the platform.

This decision is not about retreating; it’s about progressing. By stepping away from a space that no longer aligns with our values, we free ourselves to build stronger, more meaningful connections elsewhere. The fight for equality, representation, and justice doesn’t happen on one platform; it happens everywhere we’re present and active.

If you have thoughts, questions, or ideas about this transition, we’d love to hear from you. Reach out through our website or follow us on our other social media platforms. Together, we’ll keep building a future where everyone can thrive.
