As part of our ongoing Wakefield Kirkgate Station Adoption Project, we’re excited to announce a creative new initiative in partnership with Grand Central.
We have the keys to take over the unused Grand Central kiosk on Platforms 2 and 3, with the aim of transforming it into a vibrant community gallery space. This project represents our commitment to reinvigorating disused areas of the station, making them more welcoming and accessible for passengers and the local community alike.
The community gallery will serve as a platform to celebrate local talent, provide a space for artistic expression, and foster stronger community connections. This innovative use of station space aligns with our broader goals of making the station a hub for creativity and engagement, going beyond its traditional function as railway station.
We’re also thrilled to announce that Empath Action CIC will be the first group to utilise this gallery space. Empath, in collaboration with Community Rail Lancashire, is already contributing to the station through a separate art project. Their artwork, designed to welcome visitors at the station’s entrance, will now extend to the Platforms 2 and 3 gallery, showcasing even more of their creative vision. This extension allows for a more immersive experience, highlighting their ongoing commitment to community enrichment and artistic innovation.

They provide a range of services, including tailored workshops, training, and creative projects, all designed to address pressing social challenges and improve emotional well-being. Their initiatives bring people together to explore diverse perspectives, build stronger communities, and cultivate skills for a more compassionate society. Empath’s work with Community Rail Lancashire, including the art installation at our station, is a testament to their ability to blend creativity with meaningful social impact.
Looking Ahead
This new community gallery on Platforms 2 and 3 marks a significant milestone for the Station Adoption Project. By collaborating with Grand Central, Northern Railway and organisations like Empath Action CIC, we’re transforming the station into a more dynamic and inclusive space. Whether you’re a commuter, a visitor, or a local resident, we invite you to experience the creativity and collaboration on display.
Stay tuned for updates as we prepare to unveil the gallery, and be sure to visit Empath’s inaugural exhibition in the space.
