As February begins, LonGBoaT Wakefield is proud to celebrate LGBT+ History Month, a time to honour the struggles, achievements, and contributions of the LGBTQ+ community throughout history. This year’s theme, "Behind the Lens," highlights the invaluable contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals in film and television, celebrating the stories told and the storytellers who bring them to life.

Why LGBT+ History Month Matters

LGBT+ History Month is an opportunity to reflect on how far we’ve come and acknowledge the work still needed to achieve equality. It reminds us to celebrate those who paved the way, including the activists, trailblazers, and everyday individuals who fought for the rights many of us enjoy today. Importantly, it’s a time to:

  • Raise Awareness: Highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by LGBTQ+ people worldwide.

  • Celebrate Diversity: Embracing the unique stories and experiences within our community.

  • Inspire Action: Encouraging allyship and continued advocacy for equal rights.

Spotlight on "Behind the Lens"

This year’s theme, "Behind the Lens," shines a light on the often-overlooked LGBTQ+ individuals working in film and television, both past and present. From directors and screenwriters to producers and actors, the creative voices behind the camera have shaped the way we see ourselves and the world. Their work not only entertains but also challenges stereotypes, sparks conversations, and inspires change.

Get Involved

Here are some ways you can celebrate LGBT+ History Month:

  • Educate Yourself: Take time to learn about LGBT+ history through books, documentaries, and online resources.

  • Attend Events: Join local events, including those hosted by LonGBoaT Wakefield, to connect with the community and celebrate together.

  • Support LGBT+ Creators: Watch films and shows created by LGBT+ artists and amplify their voices.

  • Be an Ally: Advocate for LGBT+ rights in your workplace, school, and community.

As we celebrate this important month, let’s remember that history is still being written. By standing together, celebrating diversity, and continuing to push for equality, we honour those who came before us while building a brighter future for generations to come.
