The Art Exchange CIC is supporting LonGBoaT Wakefield and Grand Central (GC) and Northern Trains, in announcing an open call for artists to create a significant mural piece at Kirkgate Railway Station.

This project aims to celebrate and depict the coming together of Wakefield's diverse communities. We are seeking proposals from LGBTQ+ artists who can bring a unique and authentic perspective to this important commission.

Project Overview:

  • Artwork Theme: The piece should powerfully depict communities in Wakefield coming together, highlighting unity, diversity, and connection.

  • Artist Identity: This commission is specifically for an artist who identifies as LGBTQ+.

  • Location: The preferred locations for the artwork are within the shelter of the subway area and the kiosk area on platform 3 of Kirkgate Railway Station (please feel free to ask for photos of specific spaces). However, artists are welcome to submit proposals exploring other prominent spaces within the station, and we are open to considering all creative interpretations for the optimal placement. We recommend you visit to gain a better understanding of the spaces available.

  • Grand Central Element: While not a strict requirement, the inclusion of a Grand Central train or a subtle element referencing GC would be appreciated. However, this should not detract from or overshadow the central theme of community unity.

  • Materials: Whist we will leave you to come up with the optimal medium for your piece, we do face some restrictions, please feel free to speak to us about this.

  • Branding: The final artwork must incorporate all relevant logos from supporting organisations.

Submission Requirements

Interested artists are invited to submit a proposal that includes:

  • Artist Statement: An introduction to your artistic practice and how your identity/experience informs your work.

  • Concept Sketch/Visuals: Initial ideas and visual representations of your proposed artwork, demonstrating how it addresses the theme.

  • Methodology: A brief outline of the mediums and techniques you intend to use.

  • Relevant Portfolio/Previous Work: Examples of past projects, particularly public art or community-focused pieces (if applicable).

  • Proposed Location Interpretation: Your thoughts on the best location within the station for your piece and why#

Application Process:

  • Submit your proposal: Please contact: Kirkgate@longboatwakefield.org

  • Deadline for Submissions: 7th July 2035

  • Deadline for install: 14th September 2025

  • Materials Budget: £800 (inclusive of track safe fitting, please speak to us about this)

  • Payment for Artist: £1200

We look forward to receiving your inspiring proposals and creating a lasting piece of art for the Wakefield community.
