Today we met with the fantastic team at Wakefield Hospice and had a tour of their facililtes next to Pinderfields Hospital. Palliative care is a deeply personal and vital aspect of end-of-life planning, yet systemic barriers continue to affect access for LGBT+ individuals. Discussions and partnerships like that of LonGBoaT Wakefield and Wakefield Hospice are instrumental in addressing these challenges, ensuring inclusive, compassionate care for all.

Under-representation in Palliative Care

Studies highlight disparities faced by the LGBT+ community in healthcare, particularly in palliative care. For many, traditional heteronormative support structures such as family networks may not exist. Some LGBT+ individuals are estranged from biological families or rely on chosen families, which can complicate access to support and decision-making at the end of life. Furthermore, fear of discrimination can deter some from seeking care, while others face healthcare providers untrained in LGBT+ sensitivities.

For instance, the Marie Curie UK Hidden Lives, Hidden Patients (2015) report revealed that LGBT+ individuals are less likely to access hospice care and often feel their unique needs are overlooked. Factors include fear of being misgendered, assumptions about relationships, and lack of diverse representation among care providers. These experiences can leave LGBT+ patients and their families feeling isolated during critical moments.

What can LonGBoaT Wakefield and Wakefield Hospice do together

LonGBoaT Wakefield is dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment for LGBT+ individuals through advocacy, events, and practical support. The organisation’s roots in community engagement and its efforts to empower underrepresented voices make it a vital ally in tackling healthcare disparities. Meanwhile, Wakefield Hospice offers extensive palliative care expertise and a commitment to providing respectful and person-centred support.

By combining LonGBoaT’s deep connection to the LGBT+ community with Wakefield Hospice’s clinical and supportive resources, this collaboration can bridge gaps in awareness and accessibility. Together, these organisations can advocate for necessary training for hospice staff, educate the community on end-of-life options, and challenge the stigma that may discourage LGBT+ individuals from seeking care.

Our discussions exemplifies how diverse organisations can unite to address complex social issues. By pooling their expertise, LonGBoaT Wakefield and Wakefield Hospice not only tackle immediate challenges in LGBT+ end-of-life care but could also set a precedent for broader societal change, ensuring dignity and equity for all individuals in their final chapters.
