Today we welcomed Families and Babies (FAB) to our Hub at Wakefield Kirkgate. By collaborating, our charities can address the unique challenges faced by non-heteronormative parents, particularly those related to infant feeding and breastfeeding.
LGBT+ people often face significant barriers when navigating parenting spaces. Societal assumptions about traditional family roles can make it difficult for LGBT+ parents to find culturally competent support that acknowledges their identities and family structures. These challenges extend to areas like breastfeeding, where the lack of representation in informational materials and peer networks can leave parents feeling isolated.
FAB Wakefield specialises in breastfeeding peer support, offering evidence-based guidance and emotional backing to parents navigating infant feeding. Their services include local peer-support networks and training for volunteers to support families effectively.

By partnering with ourselves, as advocates for the LGBT+ community in Wakefield, the organisations can combine our client base to create a safe and welcoming environment for all parents.
A unique barrier, for example, is Lesbian couples who often report a lack of representation in breastfeeding resources, which frequently cater to heterosexual families. This can result in feelings of exclusion and fewer opportunities to access critical support. For example, biological and non-biological mothers may face different challenges, such as difficulties initiating lactation for the non-biological parent or a lack of guidance on co-nursing.
Additionally, societal biases may discourage lesbian parents from attending mainstream breastfeeding groups, fearing judgement or discomfort in heteronormative settings. By providing inclusive spaces that celebrate diversity, this partnership can help dismantle these barriers, encouraging all parents to seek support without fear of stigma.
Through our collaboration, LonGBoaT Wakefield and FAB can share resources that address the specific needs of LGBT+ parents. FAB’s strong foundation in breastfeeding education, coupled with LonGBoaT’s advocacy for inclusive practices, ensures that training for peer supporters and healthcare professionals incorporates an understanding of diverse family structures.
Additionally, the partnership can amplify awareness about the challenges faced by LGBT+ families, using community events and online campaigns to foster a more inclusive narrative around parenting.
