On Monday 29 September 2025, LonGBoaT Wakefield joined community organisations, businesses, and local leaders at the launch of the Wakefield District Plan 2025–2035. The event, hosted by Wakefield Council, marked the start of a shared vision to make the district stronger, fairer, and more connected over the next decade.

Why it matters

The District Plan sets out 22 long-term outcomes, from tackling climate change and improving health, to building stronger, safer, and more welcoming communities. It’s not just a Council document; it’s a shared commitment between local partners to make Wakefield a better place for everyone.

For LonGBoaT Wakefield and the LGBT+ community, this plan matters deeply. Our community’s wellbeing is tied to how inclusive, safe, and supportive the district truly is. Many of the Plan’s outcomes (fairness, equality, safety, mental health, and youth opportunities) speak directly to issues LGBT+ people face every day.

When local strategies include us from the start, our lives improve in real ways: safer streets, inclusive healthcare, equal access to housing, and schools where young people can be themselves without fear.

Our part in this

We were proud to stand alongside other voluntary groups at the launch, showing that LGBT+ voices are part of Wakefield’s future, not an afterthought. The event gave us a chance to:

  • Build connections with organisations who share our goals around equality and wellbeing.

  • Highlight LGBT+ inclusion is essential to building a strong district, not optional.

  • Commit to partnership work that turns equality policies into daily practice.

As the Plan moves from words to action, we’ll work with Wakefield Council and community partners to make sure inclusion runs through everything.

What’s next

We’ll align our ongoing projects and events with the Plan’s key outcomes. That means:

  • Taking part in initiatives that build safer public spaces and reduce hate crime.

  • Promoting visibility and representation across the district’s cultural and civic life.

A stronger Wakefield includes everyone

The launch reminded us that the District Plan is about shared responsibility. Building a stronger Wakefield means making sure every voice is heard, valued, and reflected in decisions. At LonGBoaT Wakefield, we’re committed to helping make that happen.
