In celebration of LGBT+ History Month, we’re proud to be working alongside West Yorkshire Archive Service and Wakefield Council’s Be Proud Network to host a special Queer Social evening exploring West Yorkshire Queer Stories (WYQS); a project dedicated to collecting, preserving and sharing LGBT+ histories from across the district.

This talk and workshop is open to everyone, including friends, allies and those who are simply curious to learn more.

📅 Thursday 12 February

6pm – 8pm

About the West Yorkshire Queer Stories project

West Yorkshire Queer Stories is a community-led archive project that documents and celebrates the lives, activism, creativity and everyday experiences of LGBT+ people across West Yorkshire. By gathering oral histories, personal memories, photographs and materials, WYQS helps ensure that queer lives are not erased from the historical record.

You can find out more about the project here:👉 https://wyqs.co.uk/

Why telling LGBT+ stories matters

For generations, LGBT+ lives have been hidden, ignored or deliberately excluded from official histories. This lack of representation can make people feel invisible as if their lives, relationships and contributions don’t matter.

Projects like West Yorkshire Queer Stories challenge that silence. They ensure that:

  • LGBT+ people can see themselves reflected in local history

  • Younger generations understand the struggles and achievements that came before them

  • Allies gain a deeper understanding of why equality, visibility and inclusion remain so important

Telling these stories is about shaping a future where LGBT+ people feel seen, valued and safe in their communities.
