At LonGBoaT Wakefield, we believe that visibility matters. Art, creativity and shared stories play a powerful role in helping LGBT+ people feel seen, valued and connected — especially in public spaces where representation is still too often missing.

That’s why we’re opening up a new call for artists, creatives and community groups to take over our Community Gallery at Wakefield Kirkgate Railway Station.

About the Community Gallery

Our Community Gallery is a public exhibition space located within Wakefield Kirkgate — a working railway station used by thousands of people every week. It offers a unique opportunity to showcase creativity in a place where art can surprise, challenge and connect with people who might not usually visit galleries.

The gallery is part of our wider station adoption work, transforming Kirkgate into a welcoming, inclusive space that reflects the diversity of our city. For LGBT+ communities in particular, having work displayed openly in a shared public environment sends a powerful message: you belong here.

What’s been displayed before

The gallery has already hosted a wide range of inspiring exhibitions, including:

  • Work by local artists and collectives, exploring themes of identity, place and belonging

  • Community art projects, celebrating creativity at all skill levels

  • Exhibitions linked to wider cultural moments, including Pride and community arts festivals

  • Displays that invite conversation, reflection and learning from passers-by

Each exhibition has helped bring colour, warmth and humanity into the station — turning everyday journeys into moments of connection.

Who we’re looking for

We’re keen to hear from:

🎨 Individual artists

🖌️ Creative collectives

🏳️‍🌈 LGBT+ community groups and organisations

🤝 Projects rooted in community, identity and lived experience

You don’t need to be a professional artist. What matters most is the story you want to tell and how your work can contribute to making public spaces more inclusive and representative. We are especially keen to support LGBT+ voices, as well as groups whose stories are underrepresented in traditional gallery settings.

What we offer

  • A free, accessible exhibition space

  • Support with installation and promotion

  • A chance to share your work with a wide and varied audience

  • Visibility for your project in a prominent public location

How to apply

If you’d like to take part, you can find full details on the gallery, along with information on how to apply and get in touch, via our website:

If you’re unsure whether your idea is a good fit, we’d still love to hear from you — we’re always happy to have a conversation.

Let’s fill the station with stories

Our Community Gallery exists because representation matters. By opening up this space, we’re continuing our commitment to ensuring Wakefield Kirkgate reflects the people who use it — including LGBT+ communities who deserve to see themselves celebrated in everyday places.

If you have artwork to share, a story to tell, or a project that deserves a platform, we’d love to work with you.
