A Great Evening of Shopping Without the Stress

On Tuesday 15th April 2025, LonGBoaT Wakefield and Barnardo’s teamed up for something a bit different: an out-of-hours shopping trip just for our Queer Group at the Barnardo’s Donations Centre (West Shopping Center) in Armley, Leeds.

Around a dozen of us turned up from 5pm onwards and were warmly welcomed by Richard, the Centre Manager. We had the whole shop to ourselves, which made a massive difference. It meant we could take our time browsing through the rails for bargains, try things on, and just enjoy ourselves without worrying who might be watching or judging our choices. It was relaxed, friendly, and felt properly safe; something that can be rare when shopping for gendered clothing.

Some of the group also brought along donations to pass along to Barnardo's which was a lovely gesture.

We also tucked into some pizza while we shopped (because no event is complete without food!).

For many LGBT+ people, especially those who are transgender, shopping for clothes can be a pretty stressful experience. Shops aren’t always the most welcoming places, and the fear of being stared at, misgendered, or made to feel uncomfortable can put a lot of people off. That’s why LonGBoaT Wakefield wanted to create a space where none of that was a problem; just a chance to shop in peace, find things that feel right, and enjoy the experience.

What’s Next?

Because this trip went so well, we’re hoping to run more of these shopping evenings in the future; not just with Barnardo’s but with other retailers too. Everyone should be able to shop for clothes without it feeling like a battle.
