The Legacy of Kirkgate Calling by the Wakefield Historical Society

In 2014, the Wakefield Historical Society launched Kirkgate Calling, a project focused on the revitalised Wakefield Kirkgate Railway Station, a site steeped in industrial and social history. This project sought not only to preserve the history of the station but also to celebrate its pivotal role in shaping the region’s development. Through research, exhibitions, and community engagement, the project brought to light untold stories of those who worked at and passed through the station, offering a glimpse into its rich past.

Now, a decade later, LonGBoaT Wakefield is hoping to building on this remarkable work and showing it to the public once again. Our aim is to uncover and share additional historical narratives that didn’t feature in the original project in conjunction with Wakefield Historical Society.

Our partnership will expand public understanding of Wakefield’s heritage, connecting historical preservation with inclusivity. Through our and digital content, we’ll bring these stories to life, ensuring that the history of Wakefield Kirkgate continues to inspire and resonate with everyone in our community. Together, we will celebrate the station’s legacy while forging new connections to its storied past.
