A Warm Welcome and a Busy Volunteering Day at Wakefield Kirkgate Station

We had a great day at Wakefield Kirkgate Railway Station on 5th May as part of our Volunteering Day. It was brilliant to welcome two new faces to the team – Louis and Keiran – who joined us for the first time.

We kicked things off with the all-important safety induction to make sure everyone’s up to speed, then went on a walk around the station to talk through some of our plans and share ideas. There’s lots in the pipeline, and it was great to get everyone’s thoughts.

After that, we got stuck into some light maintenance work – watering the planters, a bit of litter picking, and giving the area a general tidy up. One job we were particularly pleased with was turning an old grit bin into a new storage box for our courtyard. It’s now a handy space for keeping tools and equipment.

While the physical work was fairly light, we also spent time doing some research and preparation for an exciting new project – developing a history trail around the station with the help of local historians. It’s early days, but we’re really looking forward to seeing where it goes.

In the background, we’ve also been working with Wakefield Council to help improve the outside of the station. Plus, we’re teaming up with a local band to bring brass music back to the subway, tying in with the Ashley Jackson exhibition.

There’s always something going on, so keep an eye on the blog for more updates soon.
