LonGBoaT Wakefield is looking to establish a small community gallery space in the waiting shelter on the island platform at Wakefield Kirkgate as part of the Station Adoption Scheme. This initiative is particularly important for the LGBT+ community, as it will provide a platform for local artists and creators to showcase their work, amplifying diverse voices and perspectives that are often overlooked in mainstream galleries.

The gallery space will celebrate and promote the unique cultural identities within the LGBT+ community, allowing for the exploration of themes related to gender, sexuality, and personal experiences. Community galleries often serve as safe havens where LGBT+ individuals can express themselves freely without fear of discrimination or judgment, fostering a sense of belonging and acceptance.

In addition to this initiative, Community Rail Lancashire is creating a suite of artwork for the station, further enhancing the visual appeal and cultural richness of Wakefield Kirkgate. .

This gallery can also become a hub for social interaction and collaboration, bringing together artists, activists, and community members to share ideas and support one another. Many LGBT+ artists may not have access to traditional gallery spaces, and this community gallery will help emerging artists gain exposure, develop their skills, and connect with audiences.
Art can be a powerful tool for all; healing and expression, and providing this space for artists to share their work can promote mental health and well-being within the community. Anyone wishing to get involved and create or display their work is encouraged to contact LonGBoaT Wakefield at kirkgate@longboatwakefield.org.
